Girl Scouts of Japan held Special Summer Camp for children in affected areas by Higashi-nihon earthquake
29 August 2011
The Girl Scouts of Japan (GSJ) held a Special Summer Camp for children in affected areas by Higashi-nihon earthquake from 14 to 16 August at National Hanayama Youth Outdoor Learning Center in Miyagi Prefecture. This camp was the first project of GIRLS' POWER UNITE PROJECT by GSJ and was a huge success with participation from 100 children.
GSJ members including Ranger Girl Scouts who are high school students supported the participants. Before the camp, all staff members learned psychological support for affected children as it is important to care about their mental health. One of our purposes is to give the affected children opportunities to feel free and easy in the midst of nature.

When I arrived here, I was so happy to hear the buzz of a cicada and breathe clean air not radiation-contaminated air. I enjoyed Campfire and outdoor activities so much. I hope Girl Scouts will create more opportunities such as this program which makes kids who are in affected areas smile. - Girl, 12 years old from Fukushima |
They enjoyed outdoor activities, learned outdoor skills and campfire. The children especially loved to roast marshmallows on a stick, and some ate many marshmallows. They enjoyed learning First Aid, knots and lashing. Also the sliding grassy slope with cardboard was so fun and they appreciated the nature while lying on the grass or crawling around.

I enjoyed this camp so much! Because I could try so many programs and spent some really good quality time with new friends. Especially I was so excited with the point rally! I really want to join such a camp again. - Boy, 10 years old from Fukushima |

Ranger Girl Scouts went all out to make the children happy. All staff were happy to see smiles and the shining eyes of the children during the camp. The expenses of this camp were covered by the goodwill donations from Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world. We strongly believe that camping makes people energetic, so GSJ will start to plan the next camp for children in affected areas soon.

My Girl Scouts have chosen to learn about Japan for their Thinking Day project. We will share this information about how the Girl Scouts of Japan helped the victims of the earthquake. This is an inspiring story. Thank you for sharing it.
